Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football franchise based in Atlanta, Georgia, competing in the National Football League's NFC South division. Rankin M. Smith was awarded the franchise on June 30, 1965, for a then-record $8.5 million, and the team began play in 1966 as the NFL's 15th franchise under first head coach Norb Hecker. Schoolteacher Julia Elliott suggested the "Falcons" nickname through a fan contest.

About Atlanta Falcons
The franchise recorded its first winning season in 1971 under coach Norm Van Brocklin, and its 1977 defense set a league record by allowing just 129 points across a 14-game schedule. Atlanta made the playoffs three times between 1978 and 1982 under coach Leeman Bennett. The team has reached two Super Bowls, losing to the Denver Broncos after the 1998 season and to the New England Patriots after the 2016 season, a game remembered for one of the largest comebacks in the sport's championship history.
Notable figures across the franchise's history include first-overall draft pick Tommy Nobis, quarterback Steve Bartkowski, running backs William Andrews and Gerald Riggs, defensive end Claude Humphrey, and return specialist Billy "White Shoes" Johnson. Arthur Blank bought the team in 2002, a year after Atlanta drafted quarterback Michael Vick first overall, beginning an era built around a mobile-quarterback offense.
Kevin Stefanski, a two-time Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year, was hired as the Falcons' 20th head coach in January 2026 after previously leading the Cleveland Browns. Despite six decades of competition, Atlanta remains among the NFL's oldest franchises without a league championship, and continues rebuilding its roster in pursuit of a first title.
