Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. He rose to fame in the 1970s as co-lead singer and songwriter of the Commodores before launching a solo career in 1982 that made him one of the best-selling artists of the era.

About Lionel Richie
His solo albums Can't Slow Down (1983) and Dancing on the Ceiling (1986) produced a string of hit singles including "Truly," "Hello" and "Say You, Say Me," the latter earning him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. He also wrote Kenny Rogers' number-one hit "Lady" (1980) and co-wrote "We Are the World" with Michael Jackson in 1985. His duet with Diana Ross, "Endless Love," remains among the best-selling singles of all time.
Richie has won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, sold more than 90 million records worldwide, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, the same year he received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
He has served as a judge on American Idol since 2018 and published his memoir, Truly, in 2025, continuing to tour and perform his catalog of soul and pop standards.
