Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and singer-guitarist James Hetfield. One of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, they helped define the genre with the speed and aggression of early albums like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets".
