Underoath are an American rock band formed on 30 November 1997 in Ocala, Florida, by vocalist Dallas Taylor and guitarist Luke Morton, soon joined by drummer Aaron Gillespie, the only member to remain throughout the band's history. The group, based around Tampa, emerged from the Christian hardcore scene, though members have since distanced themselves from an explicitly religious identity.

About Underoath

Early albums such as Act of Depression (1999) and Cries of the Past (2002) drew on death and black metal alongside hardcore. After Spencer Chamberlain replaced Taylor as vocalist in 2003, the band's sound stabilized around metalcore and post-hardcore. They're Only Chasing Safety (2004) went gold, and Define the Great Line (2006) reached number two on the Billboard 200.

Underoath became known for alternating Chamberlain's harsh vocals with Gillespie's cleaner singing and drumming, a format credited with helping popularize the metalcore genre through the 2000s. The band announced its breakup in October 2012, released a career-spanning compilation, and completed a farewell tour before parting ways in early 2013.

Underoath reunited in 2015 with Gillespie back in the lineup, returning to record Erase Me (2018) and Voyeurist (2022); the single 'On My Teeth' earned a Grammy nomination. Their tenth studio album, The Place After This One, followed in 2025, and the band continues to tour and record with Chamberlain, Gillespie, Dudley, McTague and Brandell.
