Dresden is a city rebuilt twice over: its Baroque Altstadt - the Frauenkirche, Zwinger and Semperoper - was painstakingly reconstructed after WWII firebombing, while the Neustadt across the river escaped the worst of the destruction and today holds the city's real nightlife, street art and independent cafe scene. The contrast between grand imperial stone and scruffy alternative streets is the whole appeal.

When to goMay to September for warm weather and riverside/beer-garden season, or December for the historic Striezelmarkt, one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets.
Getting aroundThere's no metro - the local geology rules it out - so trams (lines 3, 7, 8 and 9) are the backbone of getting around, linking Altstadt to Neustadt in roughly 10-15 minutes. The Altstadt itself is compact and easily walkable.
Where to stayAltstadt - steps from the major sights and museums, quieter in the evenings; Aussere Neustadt - bars, independent shops and street art around Louisenstrasse, the liveliest base; inner Neustadt - calmer residential streets by the river with a short tram ride to the sights.
Maybe skip ifnightlife on the scale of Berlin, or a beach and coast getaway
