Nuremberg is Bavaria's other big city: a red-sandstone medieval old town ringed by its original walls, timber-framed streets climbing to an imperial castle, and a history that swings from Holy Roman Empire glory to Nazi rally grounds to the war-crimes trials that followed. It smells of grilled Nurnberger sausages and roasted almonds most of the year, and turns into one long candlelit market from late November. It is compact and walkable in a way few German cities its size manage.

Best formedieval old-town wandering, Christmas markets and confronting 20th-century history head-on
When to goDecember for the Christkindlesmarkt, one of Germany's oldest and most famous Christmas markets, though expect crowds, cold and booked-out hotels; May to September for warmer walking weather and beer gardens with fewer coach tours
Getting aroundThe old town is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes; VAG's U-Bahn, tram and bus network covers the rest of the city cheaply and the airport sits on the U2 line, about 12 minutes from the centre. ICE trains put Munich just over an hour away and Frankfurt around two.
Where to stayAltstadt/St. Lorenz for medieval lanes and being within walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof; Marienvorstadt for a quieter, well-connected base just outside the walls; Gostenhof for a hipper, more alternative scene of converted workshops and vintage shops a short tram ride from the centre
Maybe skip iftravellers wanting to avoid heavy WWII history — the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and Documentation Centre are a short tram ride away and hard to skip if you're curious about the city's role
