The Munich Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is one of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in the German-speaking world, with roots tracing back to a Nikolaimarkt documented in 1310. Today, around 140 market stalls draw roughly three million visitors each year, who come to experience the festive atmosphere beneath a nearly 30-meter-tall Christmas tree adorned with some 2,500 lights, donated annually by a different town from Austria or Italy.

Beyond the traditional mulled wine and culinary offerings, the market features a rich musical program with live Bavarian Stubenmusik, wind ensembles, and choirs performing from the Town Hall balcony. A highlight is the Krampus run on December 13, where costumed figures like Krampus and Perchten parade through the city center, a tradition dating back 500 years.
