New Year's Eve at Puerta del Sol

Madrid's Puerta del Sol is the epicenter of Spain's most iconic New Year's Eve celebration. As the clock in the square strikes midnight, crowds gather to eat twelve grapes—one for each chime—a tradition broadcast live since 1962 on major networks like Atresmedia and RTVE. The square, home to the famous clock and the Km 0 marker of Spain's radial roads, transforms into a sea of revelers under the glow of the Tío Pepe sign.

Beyond the countdown, the square itself is steeped in history. Once a gate in the 15th-century city wall, it later became a hub for couriers and gossip at the Gradas de San Felipe. The Royal House of the Post Office, built between 1766 and 1768, now serves as the seat of the Presidency of the Madrid Community. Plaques on its facade honor the 1808 uprising against Napoleon and victims of the 2004 Madrid bombings.

Attendees can also spot the statue of Charles III, the Bear and the Strawberry Tree (Madrid's heraldic symbol), and the Mariblanca. The square, pedestrianized in 2020, offers a festive atmosphere with a mix of locals and visitors ringing in the new year together.
