Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga

Overview

Housed in a converted 16th-century Baroque palace, the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga showcases 19th-century Spanish painting, with a strong focus on Andalusian works. The permanent collection spans three rooms, while two additional spaces host temporary exhibitions, all set within a modern extension that brings the total display area to over 5,000 square metres.

Visitors can explore masterpieces by artists such as Zurbarán, Fortuny, and Zuloaga, alongside works by local painters like Guillermo Gómez Gil and Julio Romero de Torres. The museum's setting also reveals Roman-era remains, including a monumental fountain and mosaics, uncovered during excavations that began in 2005.

Beyond the art, the museum itself is a journey through history—from its origins as a suburban Roman villa to its current incarnation as a cultural landmark in the heart of Málaga. It offers a rich, immersive experience for anyone interested in Spanish art and the layered past of the city.
