Marina Otero's latest creation, AYOUB, is a devastating piece that blends physical theatre with irreverent humour and cynicism to rebel against injustice. The Argentine artist, now based in Madrid, intertwines the intimate with the political, confronting love with history. The performance begins with a mutual rescue project: Otero travels to Tangier intending to marry a man to give him papers and a life in Europe, but her encounter with Ayoub shatters that abstract idea. The show becomes a radical social denunciation, where personal history collides with collective tragedy.
Otero names the piece AYOUB, a common name in the Islamic world and one borne by hundreds of children killed by the Israeli state in Gaza. Thus, Ayoub becomes a symbol of violence and suffering in Palestine, drawing a parallel between personal love story and collective tragedy. Alongside Ibrahim Ibnou Goush, Otero crafts her most political work, without renouncing the shamelessness that defines her. The performance is in Spanish and Darija, with surtitles in French and English.
Around the show, an arpentage workshop on Emilia Roig's "L'envers du monde" takes place on May 26, and a post-show discussion with the artistic team is scheduled for May 27. The venue, Maison des Métallos, offers a convivial setting for these exchanges.
