Être Surya: A Theatrical Journey with Lucie Hanoy

Lucie Hanoy's "Être Surya" is a joyful and political coming-of-age story that challenges societal norms around body image and self-acceptance. The play follows 13-year-old Madie, who dreams of figure skating and freedom but faces mockery at school for being "too heavy" to fly. Drawing inspiration from her idol, champion skater Surya Bonaly—a symbol of resistance against social and racial discrimination—Madie navigates the transition from childhood to adolescence in search of identity and role models.

The production weaves together the parallel journeys of a young girl finding her place and a accomplished athlete who refused to conform to the rules.
