Read full details

The Champion Trees Project identifies and protects South Africa's most remarkable individual trees and groves under the National Forests Act of 1998. These trees are selected for their exceptional biological attributes—such as diameter, height, and crown spread—as well as their age (at least 120 years) and heritage significance, including aesthetic, historical, and cultural value.

Visitors can explore these living monuments across the country, from indigenous giants in protected areas to non-indigenous specimens in botanical gardens. Each Champion Tree tells a story of natural heritage and conservation, offering a unique opportunity to connect with South Africa's botanical legacy.

As of 2018, 93 trees have been designated Champion Trees, each protected from cutting, disturbance, or damage under the National Forests Act.
