John Adams, a key Founding Father and the second president of the United States, is remembered for his pivotal role in the American Revolution and early nation-building. As a Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress, he assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence and was its primary advocate in Congress. His diplomatic service included representing the United States in France and the Netherlands, negotiating the peace treaty with Great Britain, and serving as the first U.S. ambassador to Great Britain.
Adams's presidency from 1797 to 1801 was marked by the French Revolutionary Wars and his insistence on American neutrality, which drew criticism from both the Jeffersonian Republicans and some Federalists. He signed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts and built up the Army and Navy during an undeclared naval war with France. Despite losing his reelection bid to Thomas Jefferson, Adams later resumed their friendship through correspondence.
Beyond politics, Adams was a dedicated diarist and correspondent, known for his writings on governance and law. He was the primary author of the Massachusetts Constitution, which influenced the U.S. Constitution. His legacy includes being one of the few early presidents who never owned slaves, and his son John Quincy Adams also became president.
