Joy Diversion brings Martha Graham's exuberant ballet *Diversion of Angels* to Stoke On Trent for a single performance. Originally titled *Wilderness Stair*, the piece premiered in 1948 and is set to an original score by Norman Dello Joio, with a set designed by Isamu Noguchi.
Unlike many of Graham's intense works, this ballet is joyful, exuberant, and lyrical. It represents three aspects of love—Adolescent, Romantic (later Erotic), and Mature—through three couples costumed in yellow, red, and white. The corps de ballet, dressed in beige, completes the ensemble.
Attendees can expect a story-less yet emotionally rich performance that has been part of the Martha Graham Dance Company repertoire and American Ballet Theatre since 1999. The evening offers a rare chance to see a classic of modern dance in an intimate setting.
