Notting Hill Carnival 2026

Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's biggest street festival and one of the world's largest Caribbean carnivals, filling the streets of Notting Hill in West London every August Bank Holiday weekend. Born out of London's Caribbean community in the 1960s, it has grown into a joyous, colour-drenched celebration of Caribbean and Black British culture that draws well over a million visitors across its two main days.

In 2026 the carnival runs from Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August. Saturday evening hosts the Panorama steel band competition (a ticketed event), while Sunday 30 August is Family and Children's Day — a gentler, family-friendly warm-up with a children's parade and mas bands. Monday 31 August (the Bank Holiday itself) is Adults' Day, the carnival's biggest day, when the full parade route fills with elaborate mas costumes, soca and calypso trucks, steel pan orchestras, and dozens of static sound systems blasting reggae, dancehall, and house music late into the evening.

Both main parade days are completely free to attend — there's no ticket needed to watch the parade or wander the street party, only for the Saturday steel band competition. Expect enormous crowds, so arrive early if you want a good spot along the route, and plan to do a lot of walking and standing.

For foreign visitors: this is an outdoor, all-weather event with intense crowd density — leave valuables at home, keep phones and bags secure, and agree a meeting point with your group in case you get separated, as mobile signal can be patchy. Notting Hill and surrounding tube stations (Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park) get very busy and some close or go exit-only at peak times, so check TfL travel advice on the day. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and try the incredible Caribbean street food — jerk chicken, curry goat, and rum punch stalls line the route.
