This performance brings Carl Orff's iconic setting of the medieval Carmina Burana manuscript to Milan. The work, composed in 1936, sets 24 poems from the 11th- and 12th-century collection of bawdy, irreverent, and satirical texts written by Goliard scholars and clergy. Orff's composition quickly became a staple of the classical repertoire, with its opening and closing movement "O Fortuna" becoming one of the most recognizable pieces in popular culture.
Attendees can expect a powerful choral and orchestral experience, featuring the dramatic medieval-themed texts that range from moralizing songs to love poems and drinking songs. The performance captures the spirit of the original manuscript, which was discovered in 1803 at the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern and is now housed in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
