Originally built in 2003 in Jenin, Palestine, The Horse of Jenin (also known as Al-Hissan) was a powerful sculpture crafted from scrap metal salvaged from houses and vehicles destroyed by the IDF during the Second Intifada. Designed by German artist Thomas Kilpper and assembled with the help of about twelve Palestinian teenagers, the 16-foot horse incorporated a piece from a PRCS ambulance that was attacked, killing Khalil Suleiman. The sculpture became a landmark of Jenin and a monument to sumud, the Palestinian cultural value of steadfastness.

Visitors to the exhibition in Firenze can expect to encounter this potent symbol of resilience and renewal. The horse's story—from its creation amid curfews and raids, to its dismantling by the IDF in 2023—offers a profound narrative of survival and cultural defiance. The display provides context through reference materials, including Kilpper's diary and video documentation, allowing attendees to engage deeply with the artwork's history and meaning.

This event presents a rare opportunity to see a piece of contemporary Palestinian heritage that has resonated globally, inspiring protests, a solo show by artist Alaa Shehada, and even a poem. It appeals to those interested in art, history, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
