Best cities to visit in Malta in 2026

Malta is tiny enough that you can base yourself almost anywhere and reach the rest of the island within 30–40 minutes, so the real choice is which town matches the trip you want: capital-city culture, seafront nightlife, a quiet Silent City, a fishing village, a family beach resort, or Gozo's slower island pace.

1. Valletta — the capital and events hub

Malta's compact Baroque capital hosts more festivals and cultural events than anywhere else on the island — the Malta Jazz Festival on the Grand Harbour waterfront, Isle of MTV at the Floriana Granaries, and a year-round programme of opera, eco and cultural events inside the fortified UNESCO World Heritage core.

2. Sliema & St Julian's — the tourist base

Malta's main hotel, dining and nightlife strip, directly across the harbour from Valletta by ferry. St Julian's Paceville district is the centre of the island's club scene; Sliema is the calmer promenade and shopping side.

3. Mdina — the Silent City

Malta's medieval former capital, a car-free walled hill town of palazzos and bastion views, paired with the Imnarja folk festival and neighbouring Rabat's Roman catacombs.

4. Victoria (Gozo) — the sister island

Gozo's capital and the base for the whole island: the Cittadella fortress, the Aurora International Folk Festival, and a 25-minute ferry away from a genuinely slower pace of life.

5. Marsaxlokk — the fishing village

Malta's picture-postcard harbour of painted luzzu boats, famous for its Sunday fish market and a belt of village feasts across the south coast.

6. St Paul's Bay — the family resort coast

The hub of Malta's north coast — Buġibba and Qawra's hotel strip, the Gozo ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa nearby, and easy access to Mellieħa Bay and the Blue Lagoon.

7. Mosta — the central stop

Home to the Mosta Dome, one of the largest unsupported church domes in the world and site of the WWII "Mosta Miracle" — a natural stop between the coasts given its central position.

8. Birkirkara — Malta's biggest town

Malta's most populous town and home to the historic Farsons Brewery, host of the summer Farsons Beer Festival — worth a stop for the brewery and feast season rather than a full base.

Which Malta town should you choose?

For a first trip, base in Sliema or St Julian's (the widest hotel choice and easiest ferry to Valletta) and day-trip the rest — nothing on the main island is more than about 40 minutes' drive. Add Gozo as a day trip or a couple of nights if you have five days or more.

FAQ

What is the best town to stay in Malta?
Sliema or St Julian's for the widest choice of hotels, dining and nightlife with an easy ferry to Valletta. Choose Valletta itself for a quieter, more historic base, or St Paul's Bay/Buġibba for family resorts and the Gozo ferry.
Is Gozo worth visiting from Malta?
Yes — Gozo (via Victoria) is a 25-minute ferry from Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta and offers a noticeably slower, greener pace, the Cittadella fortress and its own festival calendar. A day trip covers the highlights; two nights lets you explore properly.
How many days do you need in Malta?
Five to seven days covers Valletta, Sliema/St Julian's, Mdina, the south coast around Marsaxlokk and a Gozo day trip comfortably. The island is small enough that a single hotel base plus public buses or a rental car reaches everywhere.
