Hugo Fregonese - O Desenraizado (1908-1987)

This retrospective at the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema celebrates the work of Argentine director Hugo Fregonese, born to Italian immigrants. Over a thirty-year career spanning at least six countries, Fregonese directed 28 feature films, 16 of which will be screened during this cycle.

Attendees can explore his four distinct phases: his early Argentine period, his Hollywood years, a European chapter, and a final return to Argentina with just two films. The programme offers a rare chance to see the breadth of his work, from his debut in 1945 to his last film in 1975.

The cycle is an essential event for cinephiles interested in transnational cinema and the lesser-known directors of the mid-20th century. It provides a comprehensive look at a filmmaker who worked across continents, blending different cultural influences into his storytelling.
