Viagem ao fim do mudo

Overview

In July, the Viagem ao Fim do Mudo series makes three essential stops at the Cinemateca Portuguesa, presenting landmark silent films with live piano accompaniment. The programme opens with Aleksandr Dovjenko's "Zemlya" ("Earth"), a lyrical ode to the Ukrainian landscape, followed by Robert Wiene's expressionist masterpiece "Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari," whose influence rippled far beyond German cinema. The cycle closes with Ernst Lubitsch's "The Marriage Circle," a hilarious 1924 comedy that marked a peak in American film artistry.

Each screening is accompanied by a live pianist: João Paulo Esteves da Silva for "Zemlya," Daniel Schvetz for "Caligari," and Filipe Raposo for "The Marriage Circle." The venue, Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, provides an intimate setting for these silent-era treasures, with intertitles translated or subtitled in Portuguese. Whether you're a silent film aficionado or a curious newcomer, this series offers a rare chance to experience cinema's early masterpieces as they were meant to be seen—on the big screen with live music.
