Getting aroundA car is close to essential. LA Metro's rail and bus network covers downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica and the airport (via the C Line/LAX shuttle) but leaves huge parts of the city underserved, so most visitors mix rideshares with a rental car and accept that freeway traffic, especially I-405 and I-10, defines the day.
Where to staySanta Monica or Venice for walkable beach life and the Third Street Promenade; Hollywood for first-timers wanting proximity to the Walk of Fame and the Bowl, with a grittier edge after dark; Downtown LA (DTLA) for Arts District warehouses, Grand Central Market and nightlife without the beach.
Maybe skip ifanyone without a car or patience for traffic; the tourist stretch of Hollywood Boulevard is grittier and more downmarket than its billing, and summer brings heat and smog
