Steel Pulse, the British roots reggae band formed in Birmingham in 1975, made history as the first non-Jamaican act to win a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Their debut album, Handsworth Revolution, helped define roots reggae outside Jamaica. Tracks like "Ku Klux Klan" confronted racism with potent lyrics and visual parodies in concert.
The band cut their teeth playing punk venues alongside the Stranglers and XTC, and aligned with Rock Against Racism. They have headlined major festivals such as Reggae Sunsplash USA and Reggae on the River. Their Atlanta show continues a legacy of politically charged, roots-driven reggae performances.
