Live sports in the United States 2026: MLB, NHL, NFL & MLS

Going to a game is one of the few things in American travel that is genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else, and it is far more accessible than visitors expect. A midweek baseball game in September or a hockey game in November is an ordinary evening out in most American cities, not a once-a-season event, and tickets for it are usually available at short notice.

Quick answer

The catch is the calendar. The four major leagues run on different, only partly overlapping seasons, so the sport available depends far more on when you travel than on where. A trip in July finds baseball and soccer and almost nothing else; a trip in November finds hockey, football and basketball all running at once.

This guide covers when each season runs, which cities put the most on, and the practical things — bag rules, transport, what a ticket actually gets you — that are worth knowing before you book. Upcoming fixtures are listed further down and update themselves.

The four seasons, and when they run

Season windows below are the long-standing league norms rather than a specific published schedule — confirm exact dates on the league or club site, which is where fixtures are released.

MLBBaseballLate March/early April to late SeptemberPlayoffs through October, World Series at the end of it
NHLIce hockeyOctober to mid-AprilStanley Cup playoffs from April into June
NFLAmerican footballSeptember to early JanuaryPlayoffs in January, Super Bowl in February
MLSSoccerLate winter through autumnPlayoffs at the end of the year

Baseball is the easiest game to get to

A Major League team plays 162 regular-season games, about half of them at home, which works out at a home game most days through the summer. That volume is why baseball is the sport to plan around if you want a game without building the whole trip on it — tickets are usually available in the week of, and often on the day.

It also puts you in some of the best buildings in American sport. Wrigley Field in Chicago opened in 1914 and still has ivy on the outfield walls; Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles opened in 1962 and is the third-oldest ballpark in the league, after Fenway Park and Wrigley. Both are worth going to regardless of who is playing.

Hockey fills the winter half of the year

The NHL is the reason an American city in January is not a dead trip. Teams play 82 games across a season that runs October to April, arenas are downtown and easy to reach, and the atmosphere in the strongest hockey markets — Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, Nashville — is the closest thing American sport has to European football.

Nashville is the unusual one: Bridgestone Arena sits directly on Lower Broadway, so a Predators game and a night in the honky-tonks are on the same block.

Football and soccer

The NFL is the hardest ticket and the shortest season. Each team plays only nine or so home games across September to January, almost all on Sundays, so a specific game has to be planned around rather than dropped into. It is also the loudest and most distinctly American day out of the four, and worth the effort if the dates line up.

MLS runs opposite the football season, from late winter through autumn, and is much easier to get into. Purpose-built soccer stadiums — GEODIS Park in Nashville, BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Q2 Stadium in Austin — are smaller, newer and more central than the NFL grounds, and supporter sections in several of them are genuinely good.

A note on basketball

The NBA season runs from October into April with playoffs through June, and its arenas are often the same downtown buildings the hockey teams use — Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles hosts both the Lakers and the LA Kings, and the United Center in Chicago hosts both the Bulls and the Blackhawks. Basketball appears on this page much less often than baseball or hockey, so if you want a specific NBA date, check the team's own site as well as the listings here.

Planning a trip around a game

  • Fixtures for a full season are published months ahead by each league — build the trip around the schedule rather than hoping.
  • Buy through the club or the league. Resale is legal and widely used in the US, but prices swing hard and the club site is the only place the face value is real.
  • Clear-bag policies are the norm at NFL stadiums and common at arenas and ballparks. Take as little as possible; there is often nowhere to store what you cannot bring in.
  • Arrive early. Gates typically open an hour or two before the first pitch or puck drop, and the pre-game hours are a real part of the experience — particularly at baseball.
  • Check how you are getting back. Downtown arenas are usually walkable or on a rail line; NFL stadiums and some ballparks are not, and rideshare pricing after a sell-out is brutal.
  • Stadium tours run on non-game days at most of the historic venues, and are a decent fallback when the schedule does not cooperate.

FAQ

What sports can I watch in the USA in 2026?
It depends on the month. Baseball (MLB) runs from spring to the end of September with playoffs in October; ice hockey (NHL) from October to April; American football (NFL) from September to early January; and soccer (MLS) from late winter through autumn. Autumn is the only time all four overlap.
Which US sport is easiest to get tickets for?
Baseball, by a wide margin. Teams play 162 games a season, roughly half at home, so tickets are usually available close to the date. NFL games are the hardest — a short season and only a handful of home dates per team.
Which US cities are best for a sports trip?
Cities with several teams in one walkable area work best — Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington and Denver all put multiple leagues within easy reach of a downtown base. Nashville is the most compact of all: its NHL arena sits directly on the main nightlife strip.
Do I need to buy US sports tickets in advance?
For the NFL, yes — home dates are few and demand is high. For baseball, hockey and soccer, buying in the week of the game is usually fine outside of marquee fixtures and the postseason.
