About Alan Davies

Davies rose through the London comedy circuit in the early 1990s, receiving the Time Out Best Young Comic award in 1991 and winning the Edinburgh Festival Perrier Award for comedy in 1994. He became widely known for portraying the title role in the BBC mystery drama Jonathan Creek, a stage-illusion designer who solves crimes, which ran from 1997 to 2016. Since 2003 he has been the only permanent panellist on the BBC panel show QI, appearing in every episode across multiple hosts, including original host Stephen Fry.

He won Best Actor at the 2001 Monte Carlo Television Festival for his role in the drama Bob & Rose, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent in 2003. Beyond acting and panel-show work, he has published three memoirs, including Just Ignore Him (2020), which discussed his childhood.

Davies continues to work across stand-up, television and writing. In 2025 he launched Think Ahead, his first major stand-up tour in a decade.
