Ben Caplan is a Canadian folk musician born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, who is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He began playing guitar at thirteen and, after studying at the University of King's College, committed to music full-time at nineteen, touring since 2006.

About Ben Caplan

Caplan performs with his band the Casual Smokers and is known for a deep baritone voice, theatrical stage presence, and compositions that draw on Klezmer, Romani, Serbian, and Moldavian musical traditions alongside folk songwriting. His albums include In the Time of the Great Remembering (2011), Birds with Broken Wings (2015), Old Stock (2018), recollection (reimagined) (2021), and The Flood (2025).

He has toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Australia, performing at festivals including Glastonbury and the Byron Bay Bluesfest, and has collaborated with musicians such as Ron Hynes, Donald MacLennan, and Socalled. He won Entertainer of the Year at the 2012 Nova Scotia Music Awards and Rising Star Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Awards.
