The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, that competes in the National Hockey League. Established in 1971, the club began play in 1972 as a founding member of the World Hockey Association before joining the NHL in 1979 as part of the WHA-NHL merger.

About Edmonton Oilers
The franchise's defining era came in the 1980s, built around Wayne Gretzky, who played for Edmonton from 1978 to 1988, alongside future Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson and Paul Coffey. During this period the Oilers won five Stanley Cup championships — in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990 — a run recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame as one of the NHL's great dynasties. Messier captained the team to its final title of that era after Gretzky's 1988 trade to the Los Angeles Kings.
After a lengthy playoff drought through the 2000s and early 2010s, the Oilers rebuilt around Connor McDavid, drafted first overall in 2015 and named team captain in 2016. The club plays its home games at Rogers Place, opened in 2016, having previously played at Rexall Place (formerly Northlands Coliseum) since 1974.
Under McDavid, Edmonton returned to sustained playoff contention, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in both 2024 and 2025, losing on both occasions to the Florida Panthers.
