EMMMA is an American alt-pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Westport, Connecticut, who previously released music under the name Emma Charles. She comes from a musical family — her grandmother taught opera voice in Chicago, her grandfather directed choirs and hosted a classical radio program, and her mother trained as an opera singer at Juilliard — and began violin lessons at age four before adding piano, voice and musical theatre training in early childhood.

About EMMMA

She studied pop songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston and worked as a touring keyboardist and guitarist for other artists before establishing herself as a solo act. Her music sets classically informed, theatrical instrumentation against contemporary pop songwriting, with EMMMA citing influences from Bon Iver and Joni Mitchell to Carole King and James Taylor. Her debut EP, Secondary Character, arrived in 2024 after roughly two years of development, produced by Doug Schadt and Emily Haber.

Secondary Character addresses self-doubt, identity and romantic and platonic relationships, and EMMMA has described the project as a deliberate move away from perfectionism toward more authentic songwriting. She has performed internationally, including shows in London, and has said she wants her writing to reflect her own instincts rather than outside expectations.
