Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band formed in Oldham, Greater Manchester, in 1983 around guitarist Graham Lambert and singer Stephen Holt, who were soon joined by drummer Craig Gill. Taking their name from a local rug shop, the group added keyboardist Clint Boon, whose Farfisa organ became a signature of their sound, and later singer Tom Hingley and bassist Martyn Walsh.

About Inspiral Carpets

The band emerged from the Madchester scene of the late 1980s alongside the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, mixing post-punk, psychedelia and dancefloor rhythms with a distinctive organ-driven sound. Their debut album, Life (1990), reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, and the single 'This Is How It Feels' made the UK Top 20, bringing them a Top of the Pops appearance. Their commercial peak came with 'Dragging Me Down' in 1992, from the album Revenge of the Goldfish.

Devil Hopping (1994) produced further hits including 'Saturn 5,' but the band split in 1995 after being dropped by their label. They reformed in 2003 and toured intermittently over the following decade; vocalist Tom Hingley left in 2011, and original drummer Craig Gill died in 2016.

Inspiral Carpets reformed again in 2022 and returned to regular live performance the following year with Lambert, Holt, Boon and Walsh alongside touring musicians, continuing to play their catalogue of Madchester-era material for audiences old and new.
