Messa
Messa are an Italian doom metal band formed in 2014 in the Veneto region of northern Italy, near Venice, by vocalist Sara Bianchin, guitarist Alberto Piccolo, bassist Marco Zanin and drummer Rocco Toaldo, later joined by a saxophonist. The four had known each other since school, but none had played doom metal before forming the group, arriving instead from backgrounds in punk, blues, hard rock and black metal.

About Messa
That mixed background shaped a sound the band call 'Scarlet Doom,' fusing doom and black metal with prog rock, jazz, dark ambient and Middle Eastern instrumentation such as oud and duduk. Their albums Belfry (2016), Feast for Water (2018) and Close (2022) built a strong reputation among underground metal critics for restless genre-crossing, with Bianchin singled out for a jazz- and blues-inflected vocal style unusual in doom metal.
The band's sound has evolved from album to album rather than settling into a fixed style, increasingly incorporating Rhodes piano, saxophone, world instrumentation and atmospheric production techniques. A serious van crash while touring in France in 2022 informed the darker, more reflective lyrical themes running through their subsequent work.
Messa signed to Metal Blade Records for their fourth album, The Spin (2025), their shortest and most 1980s-influenced release to date, drawing on synthesizers and deathrock production while retaining the band's doom foundations.
