Phil Wang was born on 22 January 1990 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, to an English mother and a Chinese-Malaysian father, and grew up largely in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. He studied at Cambridge University, where he performed with the Footlights, before moving into stand-up comedy and co-founding the sketch group Daphne.
