About Steve Hackett

With Genesis he played on studio albums including Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, contributing guitar solos such as those on "The Musical Box" and "The Return of the Giant Hogweed." He is credited as an early pioneer of two-handed tapping and sweep-picking techniques that later became widespread in rock guitar. After leaving Genesis, he built an extensive solo catalogue spanning progressive rock, blues, classical and world music, beginning with Voyage of the Acolyte in 1975. In the 1980s he co-founded the supergroup GTR with Yes guitarist Steve Howe, scoring a US Top 20 hit with "When the Heart Rules the Mind."

Hackett left Genesis in 1977 to concentrate on solo work, having already released his debut album while still a band member. Since 1996 he has revisited his former band's catalogue through the Genesis Revisited series, reinterpreting the group's early material in the studio and in extensive touring with rotating ensembles of guest musicians, work that has been credited with keeping the band's pre-1977 output in active circulation.

Hackett has continued to record and tour into his seventies, releasing albums such as The Circus and the Nightwhale in 2024 alongside ongoing orchestral concert tours that combine his Genesis-era material with newer solo compositions.
