The Academic
The Academic are an Irish rock band from Killucan, County Westmeath, formed in 2013 by school friends Craig Fitzgerald (lead vocals, guitar), Matthew Murtagh (guitar), Stephen Murtagh (bass), and Dean Gavin (drums). Their debut EP, Loose Friends, released in October 2015, drew a strong enough response to sell out their first Dublin headline show at Vicar Street.

About The Academic
Their debut album, Tales from the Backseat, was released in January 2018 and entered the Irish Albums Chart at number one; it was later nominated for Album of the Year at the 2019 Choice Music Prize. Their second album, Sitting Pretty, released in February 2023, also debuted at number one in Ireland. Breakthrough single "Bear Claws" (2017) helped establish the band's melodic, riff-driven sound.
The band was selected by RTE 2FM to represent Ireland at the Eurosonic Noorderslag showcase festival in 2016, and a live-looping performance they streamed on Facebook Live went viral, drawing over a million YouTube views within 48 hours.
The Academic have toured extensively since, including a run of dates opening for Louis Tomlinson's 2023 world tour, building on a sound centered on anthemic choruses and themes of youth and relationships.
