The Mountain Goats are an American indie folk project founded in 1991 by singer-songwriter John Darnielle, then working as a psychiatric nurse in California, and now based in Durham, North Carolina. Despite its plural name, the act began as Darnielle's solo vehicle, and he remains its only constant member across more than three decades of recording.

About The Mountain Goats

Darnielle built a cult following recording on cassette decks and boomboxes, releasing lo-fi material through labels including Shrimper Records during the 1990s, culminating in the acclaimed All Hail West Texas (2002). That same year's Tallahassee marked the project's first full-band, studio-recorded album and its debut for 4AD. The Sunset Tree (2005) drew on Darnielle's childhood experience of an abusive stepfather. Darnielle has also authored the novel Wolf in White Van, a National Book Award finalist.

The touring lineup has included bassist Peter Hughes, who joined in the mid-1990s and departed in August 2024, alongside drummer Jon Wurster, who joined in 2007, and multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, who joined in 2015. Across roughly 600 songs, Darnielle's dense, literate lyric writing has drawn comparisons to a poet as much as a songwriter.

The Mountain Goats released Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan in November 2025 on their own label, Cadmean Dawn, ending a fifteen-year run with Merge Records, with a further album titled Days announced for 2026.
