The Shins
The Shins are an American indie rock band formed in 1996 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a side project of James Mercer, then a member of the band Flake Music. Mercer has remained the group's sole constant member through several lineup changes; the current band also includes Yuuki Matthews, Mark Watrous, Jon Sortland, and Patti King.

About The Shins
The band's music draws on 1960s pop songwriting traditions paired with surreal, image-heavy lyrics. Its catalog includes the acclaimed debut Oh, Inverted World (2001), Chutes Too Narrow (2003), Wincing the Night Away (2007), which reached number two on the Billboard 200, Port of Morrow (2012), and Heartworms (2017).
The song "New Slang" became the band's defining early work after its prominent use in the 2004 film Garden State, where a character claims the song "will change your life" — exposure that significantly broadened the band's audience beyond the indie scene.
Mercer has continued to lead the Shins through changing rosters of backing musicians, sustaining the band's presence in indie rock since its formation in the late 1990s.
