The Sword
The Sword are an American heavy metal band formed in Austin, Texas, in 2003 by singer, guitarist and songwriter John D. Cronise, who had spent several years writing and recording on his own before joining with guitarist Kyle Shutt and drummer Trivett Wingo. Their music draws on doom metal and stoner rock, taking cues from Black Sabbath and Sleep.

About The Sword
The band's albums include Age of Winters (2006), the breakthrough concept record Warp Riders (2010) and Apocryphon (2012), which reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and became their highest-charting release. They followed with High Country (2015) and Used Future (2018), and toured extensively, including multiple support slots for Metallica.
The current lineup pairs Cronise and Shutt with bassist and keyboardist Bryan Richie and drummer Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III. The Sword disbanded in October 2022 before reuniting in 2024, and they have since returned to touring, marking Warp Riders' fifteenth anniversary with a dedicated anniversary tour.
Live, the band builds its set around the interplay of Cronise's riff-driven rhythm guitar and Shutt's lead lines over a heavy, low-tuned rhythm section, a formula shaped by the group's roots in Austin's metal scene and its early tours opening arena shows for Metallica.
