Washington Spirit
The Washington Spirit is an American professional women's soccer team based in Washington, D.C., and an inaugural member of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), founded in 2012 and beginning league play in 2013.

About Washington Spirit
The club finished last in its debut season but reached the playoffs in its second and third years. It moved into Audi Field in Washington, D.C., in 2019 after playing earlier seasons at the Maryland SoccerPlex and George Mason University. The team has been led by ownership that has included Bill Lynch, Steve Baldwin, and, since March 2022, Michele Kang, the first woman of color to own an NWSL team.
The Spirit won its first NWSL Championship in 2021, defeating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in extra time, and has reached the championship match four times overall, in 2016, 2021, 2024, and 2025, in addition to winning the 2025 NWSL Challenge Cup.
In 2021, the team's ownership was disrupted when head coach Richie Burke was dismissed following harassment allegations, a controversy that contributed to the sale that brought Kang into the ownership group in 2022. Minority investors in the club have included Jenna Bush Hager and Chelsea Clinton.
