We Are Scientists is an American rock band formed in 1999 by vocalist and guitarist Keith Murray and bassist Chris Cain, who met at Pomona College in California before relocating to Berkeley and later New York City. According to band lore, their name originated when a U-Haul employee, inspecting their rented van, mistook the bespectacled trio for scientists.

About We Are Scientists

Their 2005 debut album, With Love and Squalor, went gold in the United Kingdom and placed the band alongside contemporaries such as Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and the Killers in the mid-2000s post-punk revival. Brain Thrust Mastery (2008) reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart. The band's sound draws on New York post-punk alongside classic influences including Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, and the Velvet Underground.

Live, the band is known for pairing tightly hooked guitar pop with comedic between-song banter. Drummer Keith Carne has recorded and performed with Murray and Cain since 2013, and the trio has continued to reach the UK Top 50 with albums including Barbara (2010), TV en Français (2014), Helter Seltzer (2016), Megaplex (2018), and Huffy (2021).

The band released its eighth album, Lobes, in 2023 and a ninth, Qualifying Miles, in 2025, continuing more than two decades of recording and touring together.
