Wings of Steel
Wings of Steel is a youth sled hockey program founded in 2001 by Tom Brake in South Jersey, growing from four players that spring to more than double that number within months. The team is based at Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, and is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Blackwood, New Jersey. Sled hockey is an adaptive form of ice hockey in which players with physical disabilities sit in sleds and use two handheld sticks to move and play the puck.

About Wings of Steel
The program's mission, "No Child Pays to Play," covers equipment, ice time, coaching and tournament costs for participating families at no charge, funded through donations. Wings of Steel competes in the Atlantic Sled Hockey League and has won USA Sled Hockey youth national championships in multiple recent seasons. Alumnus Tim Jones of Mount Ephraim went on to play for the U.S. national sled hockey team, winning a bronze medal at the 2006 Paralympics in Torino and a gold medal at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver.
The program is run by volunteer leadership, including president Lori Kile, and accepts participants regardless of prior experience, providing adaptive equipment and on-ice assistance such as sled pushers. Founder Tom Brake has since died, and the team has continued under the coaches and family members who carry forward the program he built, with weekly practices held during the season and new athletes encouraged to observe before joining.
