Yard Act
Yard Act are a British rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, formed in September 2019 by vocalist James Smith and bassist Ryan Needham, both previously members of other Leeds bands, Post War Glamour Girls and Menace Beach respectively. The pair began writing minimalist rock tracks together using a drum machine and a borrowed bass guitar; guitarist Sam Shipstone and drummer Jay Russell later completed the current line-up.

About Yard Act
The band's sound mixes wiry post-punk minimalism with dance-pop, Afrobeat and hip-hop influences, built around Smith's spoken-word-inflected vocal delivery and lyrics addressing capitalism, gentrification and social class with dark humour and cynical storytelling. Their debut album, The Overload, was released on 21 January 2022 and debuted at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart, earning a shortlist place for the Mercury Music Prize and the BBC Sound of 2022 list.
Their second album, Where's My Utopia?, followed in 2024, produced by Gorillaz collaborator Remi Kabaka Jr. and reaching the UK Top 5, expanding the band's palette toward funk and dance influences. A third album, You're Gonna Need a Little Music, was released in 2026.
Yard Act have continued to tour internationally behind their expanding catalogue, building on early recognition including Paste magazine's Best New Artists of 2021 and the Reeperbahn Festival's Anchor International Music Award.
