About Bulgaria
Bulgaria is still one of Europe's better value surprises: Sofia's mix of Roman ruins, Ottoman mosques and Soviet-era monuments sits a short flight from Black Sea beach resorts and the rose valleys and monasteries of the interior. Plovdiv, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, has quietly become a genuine cultural draw with its old town and creative quarter. It's a country of real contrasts, cheap by Western European standards, a bit rougher round the edges outside the cities, and rewarding for travellers who want mountains, coast and history without the crowds or the price tag of its neighbours.

Discover Bulgaria
Bulgaria is one of Europe’s least-visited and most rewarding destinations: Sofia’s mix of Byzantine churches and Roman ruins beneath the Vitosha mountain, the rose-valley interior, the Rhodope hills with medieval monasteries, and a Black Sea coast of long sandy beaches at Sunny Beach and the preserved old towns of Sozopol and Nessebar.
It’s a four-season country: skiing at Bansko and Borovets in winter, spring hiking in the Rhodopes and Pirin mountains, summer Black Sea beaches, and autumn wine harvest in the Thracian Valley. Prices are among the lowest in the EU, and distances between attractions are short.
Top places in Bulgaria
- Sofia — Golden domes, Roman ruins and a buzzing café scene beneath Vitosha mountain.
- Rila Monastery — The national monastery of Bulgaria — vivid frescoes and mountain scenery in the Rila range.
- Plovdiv — Bulgaria’s second city: a Roman amphitheatre, a bohemian old town and the European Capital of Culture 2019.
- Bansko — The country’s top ski resort and a well-preserved Bulgarian Revival old town.
- Nessebar & the Black Sea Coast — UNESCO old town on a peninsula, beside long sandy beaches and the resort of Sunny Beach.
