Magdeburg is a 1,200-year-old city that looks much younger, because roughly 90% of it was destroyed in a single WWII bombing raid and rebuilt largely in GDR style. What survived and what got added since stand out precisely because they're rare: Germany's first Gothic cathedral (burial place of Otto the Great), Hundertwasser's wildly colourful Green Citadel, and just outside town, the Magdeburg Water Bridge β€” the longest navigable aqueduct in Europe, carrying canal boats over the Elbe. It's a quiet, lightly touristed stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Best forengineering curiosities (the water bridge), Ottonian and cathedral history, and an off-the-beaten-path Saxony-Anhalt stop
When to goMay to September for cycling out to the water bridge and time in the cathedral gardens; winters are cold and grey with little to compensate indoors compared to bigger German cities
Getting aroundThe Altstadt and cathedral area are walkable; MVB trams and buses handle the rest cheaply. The Water Bridge sits several kilometres outside the centre and is best reached by bike or a short drive/bus combination, best done as a half-day trip.
Where to staythe Altstadt around the cathedral for the historic core and Green Citadel on your doorstep; Hasselbachplatz for the closest thing Magdeburg has to a nightlife/restaurant hub, a short walk from the centre
Maybe skip iftravellers wanting a dense historic old town or lively nightlife β€” most of the pre-war centre is gone and the city is noticeably quieter than comparable German cities
