Mannheim doesn't do postcard old towns — its 17th-century planners laid the centre out as a grid of lettered and numbered blocks (the Quadrate) instead of street names, and heavy WWII bombing means most of what you see today was rebuilt afterwards. What it does have is a genuine claim to automotive history (Carl Benz built and drove the first car here in 1885/86) and a scrappy, studenty energy around the harbourside Jungbusch district. It's a working Rhein-Neckar city more than a sightseeing one.

Best forautomobile history buffs, a low-key student/nightlife scene and using as a base for the wider Rhein-Neckar region

Getting aroundThe Quadrate's lettered grid (A1, B2, and so on) is confusing for about a day and then oddly logical; RNV trams and buses cover the city well, and Frankfurt Airport is under an hour away by train. Mannheim Hauptbahnhof is a fast ICE stop between Frankfurt and Stuttgart/Basel.
Where to staythe Quadrate/Planken for the historic grid centre, shopping and the best tram connections; Jungbusch for a younger, creative, harbourside crowd with more nightlife; Oststadt for a quieter, leafy residential base near the university
Maybe skip iftravellers chasing a classic medieval German centre — the Quadrate grid is functional and reconstructed rather than picturesque, and the Ludwigshafen chemical works sit directly across the Rhine
