San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey team based in San Jose, California, competing in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. Established on May 9, 1990, the franchise began play in the 1991-92 season as the city's first major professional sports team, spending its first two seasons in San Francisco before relocating to a purpose-built arena in San Jose in 1993.

About San Jose Sharks
The team's identity centers on a shark motif referencing the Red Triangle, a stretch of Northern California coastline known for shark activity; its logo depicts a shark biting through a hockey stick. Notable players have included Joe Thornton, who won the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP after joining the team in 2005; Patrick Marleau, whose number was the first retired by the franchise; and goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, winner of the 2000-01 Calder Trophy as top rookie.
The Sharks won the Presidents' Trophy for the league's best regular-season record in 2008-09, setting franchise records of 53 wins and 117 points. Their deepest playoff run came in 2015-16, when they won the Western Conference championship and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.
The franchise missed the playoffs for four consecutive seasons between 2020 and 2023 while rebuilding around a younger roster. It selected forward Macklin Celebrini first overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, and Celebrini has since broken the team's single-season points record previously held by Thornton; the Sharks added forward Michael Misa as the second overall pick in 2025.
