Tony Blackburn
Tony Blackburn, born Anthony Kenneth Blackburn on 29 January 1943 in Guildford, Surrey, is an English disc jockey and broadcaster whose career spans more than six decades. He began as a singer before turning to radio, broadcasting on the pirate stations Radio Caroline and Radio London during the 1960s.

About Tony Blackburn
Blackburn joined the BBC in 1967 and became the first voice heard on BBC Radio 1 at its launch on 30 September that year. He went on to present the station's flagship breakfast show until 1973 and later hosted Radio 1's Junior Choice. Known for championing Motown and soul music, he is credited with helping push Diana Ross's "I'm Still Waiting" to number one in the UK in 1971. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2024 for services to broadcasting.
After leaving Radio 1, Blackburn worked across Capital London, Classic Gold Digital, and BBC Local Radio before returning to the BBC network, presenting Pick of the Pops on Radio 2 from 2010 to 2016. In 2002 he won the first series of the ITV reality show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, broadening his profile beyond radio.
Blackburn continues to present Sounds of the 60s on BBC Radio 2 and works for the British Forces Broadcasting Service. From January 2026 he adds a new weekly programme, Tony Blackburn's Sounds of Soul, spotlighting soul and R&B tracks across the decades on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
