Getting aroundThe historic centre is best covered on foot — much of it is pedestrianised or narrow enough that walking beats transit. The metro has three lines (A, B/B1 and C) but limited coverage of the centre itself, since construction keeps hitting archaeological finds; buses and trams fill the gaps but run slower than the map suggests.
Where to stayTrastevere — cobbled, atmospheric, dense with trattorias and the best evening buzz; Monti — trendy and central, an easy walk to the Colosseum; Prati — calmer and more residential, close to the Vatican and well connected by metro
Maybe skip ifanyone wanting calm or short queues — major sights are crowded year-round, and pickpocketing is a real risk on public transport and around tourist hotspots
