Júlio Pomar: A Cola Não Faz a Colagem

This exhibition at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar in Lisbon celebrates the centenary of the artist with a focus on his experimental use of collage. Spanning over seven decades of work, it brings together around 50 pieces that show how Pomar cut, juxtaposed, recombined, and transformed images, supports, and objects across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and assemblage.

Visitors can explore key works such as *Metro* (1964), where he first incorporated an object into the canvas, and *Thétis ou Le Bleu du Ciel, d’après Ingres* (1970–73), a modular piece that allows multiple compositions. The exhibition highlights how fragmentation and montage were central to Pomar's practice, questioning the structure of the image and reinventing visual narratives.

Curated by Sara Antónia Matos, Pedro Faro, and Constança Pupo Cardoso, the show reaffirms the radical freedom and enduring relevance of Pomar's artistic legacy. It offers a deep dive into the creative process of one of Portugal's most significant 20th-century artists.
